Appearance: They are shiny, reddish-brown in colour with area behind head is outlined by a yellow band and between 30-43 mm in length, they have wings and can fly short distance. Lifecycle: American cockroach lays its eggs in an egg capsule which is called an “ootheca”. Measuring around 8mm, American cockroach ootheca are dark brown in colour and symmetrical in shape with each ootheca containing about 16 eggs. American cockroaches can develop from egg to adult in as little as 5½ months. Habits: American cockroaches are omnivorous and scavengers and they will feed on almost anything available. However, they do starchy foods, flour and fermented products. Habitat: The American cockroach is most likely to be found in and around restaurants, grocery stores, bakeries, home kitchens, and other food preparation areas. Cockroaches tend to prefer areas that are warm and humid. Like most indoor pests, they are looking for sources of food and water as well as a safe place to rest and reproduce. Threats: They can spread disease, contaminate our food and cause allergies and even asthma.

German Cockroach

Appearance: German Cockroach are yellowish brown in color and have 2 vertical stripes on pronotum (back of the neck) and between 10-15 mm in length. they have wings, these roaches do not fly. Lifecycle: a German female cockroach is capable of producing almost 400 eggs. Each egg case, or ootheca, contains approximately 30 to 40 eggs, the average time for development, from egg to adult can range from 54 to 215 days, German adults’ cockroaches can survive anywhere from 100 to 200 days. Habits: They will eat a wide variety of things, but prefer meat, grease and starchy foods when available. Habitat: German roaches are usually found in environments that are both moist and also fairly warm. Male roaches fly if disturbed, but female roaches do not fly at all Lifecycle: Aadult brown-banded cockroach can live anywhere from 130 to 315 days, with an average life span of 206 days, a female brown-banded cockroach will produce approximately 14 egg capsules, or oothecas, which contains an average of 10 to 18 eggs, Habits: These roaches prefer starchy foods including glue from envelopes or stamps, and paper products. Habitat: Brown-banded cockroaches like warm, indoor areas. They are often found hiding behind pictures on walls, in piles of clutter or in the hollow parts of furniture. Habits: prefer to feed on starches and decaying organic matter, they will forage in garbage cans and discard containers for food.
